About this course

Course Description

The National Water Hygiene training scheme is a nationally recognised scheme for anyone working on, or adjacent to water supply installations known as ‘Restricted Operations’, meeting the requirements as set out by water supply companies and Water Supply Regulators across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The scheme sets out an individual’s duty of care to prevent contamination and to maintain public health by applying UK Water Industry best practice approaches.

Want to get certified from anywhere? Explore our flexible, trainer-led National Water Hygiene Remote Live training courses.

The course provides candidates with essential knowledge, understanding, and awareness of the potential hazards and risks which have the potential to impact the quality of drinking water when working on restricted operations sites and how to prevent these, following recognised industry hygiene standards.

Any person working on a restricted operations water site, such as service reservoirs, water pumping stations, water treatment works, wells, springs, boreholes, and those working on the water distribution network inclusive of water mains and service pipes must have a valid National Water Hygiene card.

A standard training programme is delivered to all direct employees of water companies, contractors, consultants, and designers to ensure consistent standards are met when working on drinking water supplies and to demonstrate competence in their understanding of safe water hygiene practices.

The National Water Hygiene course can be delivered in a number of ways.

  • Classroom-based course
  • Computer-based course
  • Remote live delivery

The course is delivered by an EUSR-accredited trainer. It is split up into theory and assessment, covering 4 separate modules. Candidates must complete a registration form, health screening questionnaire, GDPR, and successfully complete a multiple-choice test paper at the end of the course.

The National Water Hygiene scheme is a ½ day course and can be delivered separately or in combination with Scottish Water DOMS (Distribution Operation and Maintenance Strategy) Modules 1- 12 training over a 1-day duration. Our courses typically run from 8:30 - 16:30, however, as a ½ day course, National Water Hygiene will usually end at 12:30.

Candidates should have a proficient level of English to participate in this course.

There are no pre-requisites for this course.

No PPE is required for this course.

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be registered on the Energy and Utility Skills Register, where registrations are valid for 3 years from the date of the training. Candidates will also be issued a Virtual EUSR Registration card. Physical cards can be provided upon request.
