Funding & Grants

McCrae Training works with the Construction Industry Training Board and Skills Development Scotland to offer funding for our Training Courses, Modern Apprenticeships, and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ) / National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ). Here we highlight the funding and grants available.

Training Courses

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) offers grants for the completion of short courses (3 hours to 29 days) focused on skills that are seen as core to the needs of the construction industry.

Companies who are:

  • CITB Registered 
  • Up to date with any Levy Returns
  • Adhering to the Grants Scheme Policy (Grants Scheme Policy – CITB)
  • Have Directly Employed Staff, Business Owners, Partners, All Subcontractors

In some cases, the name of the course might differ, if you can’t find the course, search for key terms.

Depending on the Tier of the course, the grant amount may differ. To find the Tier of your course, search here: Short Training Standards Search – CITB

This grant can be used for renewal courses as long as the training is required to be renewed after a specific time, as stated in the standard details. The standard details can be found on the accreditation website for the awarding body of the course.

 

This grant can be used for refresher training, where the refresher course has a full standard developed and specifies a refresher is required. The grant is available for 50% of the grant for the original full-length course.

CITB cap the amount of grants that a company can apply for. This is reset every April 1st. The cap is based on:

  • Your company’s latest Levy Return
  • How many employees are on the payroll
  • Your company’s subcontractor wage bill.

You will need:

  • Relevant details of the person attending the course
  • Your company’s 7-digit CITB registration number

Once the individual has completed the course, McCrae Training will update the construction training register and you should receive the grant payment.

Qualification Grants

CITB offers support to providers who offer Vocational Qualifications (VQs). These VQs are further education courses that enable progression for individuals into the construction industry. These are further education courses, resulting in subsequent employment. 

These grants are split into 2 parts. Completion of the work experience element of an approved further education courses. The work experience must last a minimum of 1 week or 30 hours. The second part of the grant is the completion of subsequent 3-month direct employment. This can include employment as part of an apprenticeship and must begin within 12 months of work experience ending.

Companies who are:

  • CITB Registered 
  • Up to date with any Levy Returns
  • Adhering to the Grants Scheme Policy (Grants Scheme Policy – CITB) and the specific requirements for this grant.

McCrae Training offer Vocational Qualifications in Network Construction Operations (Gas) and Network Construction Operations (Water) which CITB provide funding for.

A £500 work experience grant is available on completion of work experience. A £1000 employment grant is then available following three months of direct employment. This can include employment as part of an apprenticeship.

CITB cap the amount of grants that a company can apply for. This is reset every April 1st. 

Each employer may receive a maximum of 5 work experience grants and 5 employment grants a year. This results in a total possible maximum of £7,500 of grants a year.

Companies can apply for a work experience grant as soon as the work experience is completed. You can apply for the employment grant three months after direct employment. Alternatively both grants can be applied 3 months following the 3 months of direct employment.

The work experience grant must be applied for within 52 weeks of the end of the work experience. The employment grant must be applied for within 52 weeks of the end of the first 3 months of employment.

Apprenticeship Grants

CITB pays grants for attendance and achievement of approved apprenticeships in Scotland. These grants are for approved apprenticeships at Level 2 and above that focus on core construction skills needed across the industry.

Companies who are:

  • CITB Registered 
  • Up to date with any Levy Returns
  • Adhering to the Grants Scheme Policy (Grants Scheme Policy – CITB) and the specific requirements for this grant.

McCrae Training offers Modern Apprenticeships in Network Construction Operations Main Layer, Network Construction Operations Service Layer and Sewerage and Drainage Operations.

A £2,500 grant per year for attendance whilst completing the apprenticeship is available. This is up to a maximum duration which differs per apprenticeship, and is payable every 13 weeks. A £3,500 achievement grant is then available following successful completion.

An additional achievement grant of £3,500 is payable on achievement of the Professional Development Award (SQA) or achievement of the Diploma (C&G). This is for SCQF Level 6 only. 

CITB cap the amount of grants that a company can apply for. This is reset every April 1st. 

Any attendance grants should be applied within 52 weeks of the start date. If the grant is applied for after 52 weeks then the grant will be paid from the date the application is received.

 

The achievement grant should only be applied for once the apprentice has completed the full apprenticeship.

Skills Development Scotland also offers funding for Apprenticeships in Scotland. The fund supports businesses in Scotland to upskill and reskills employees, helping business to address key skills gaps and training needs.

There are different routes to access funding depending on your type of business and the type of training you need.

Employers who are levy-payers can access a higher amount of support. Non-levy paying SMEs can still access support, however, it may not be as much.

Skills Development Scotland offers funding for Modern Apprenticeships, Foundation Apprenticeships and Graduate Apprenticeships.

Levy-payer employers can access up to £15,000 worth of support. Non-levy paying SMEs can access up to £5,000 worth of support.

Employers can access the fund once per academic year. Grants are distributed on a first come first served basis.
