Within the utility and construction sector, training is an essential element of the job to ensure you have the certifications you need to get on site. This helps to ensure that sites are as safe as possible as everyone is thoroughly trained for the role they are performing and understand their responsibilities on the site.
As a training provider, we are well aware of the role we play in ensuring training is open to all. Making reasonable adjustments to our training and making it as accessible as possible is a vital part of providing training courses to the public.
Disability in the Construction Industry
In the construction industry, disabilities can often be treated as the elephant in the room. This is particularly relevant for hidden disabilities. Due to it being treated as a taboo subject, those that would fall into the category of having a disability can often go missed or not feel comfortable speaking up about it.
Living with a learning difficulty like dyslexia can be challenging. The Brain Charity has reported that as many as one in ten people are affected by dyslexia in the UK. These types of disabilities can often go undiagnosed or can be easily forgotten as they are not visible.
For the purposes of training, these disabilities can be massive barriers to professional development. Providing support can help to bring down those barriers, however.
Additional Support Needs
Here at McCrae Training, we aim to make our training environment welcoming and supportive. If we are aware of a candidate having any additional support needs, we are ready to help them wherever they can to ensure they get the most out of their training course as possible.
We want to see all of our candidates pass their exams, get their tickets, and get to work safely. When an additional support need is not disclosed, this can negatively affect a candidates’ chances of passing their assessments, and will mean they will have to be retrained – taking them away from site.
Working with a learning difficulty can be challenging – especially when the support a candidate needs is not offered. We want to help all of our candidates, and set them up for the best chance of success possible.
This is why we ask on our booking form for additional support needs to be disclosed. If you, while completing a booking form, are not aware of a candidate’s additional support needs, our trainers are ready to have discrete and understanding conversations to ensure that they still have access to an excellent learning environment.
Accessible Training
We make an intentional and concentrated effort to make our training accessible to all and we have tailored our training for these purposes.
