Course Description

This SQA-accredited Street Works course re-assesses candidates who currently hold valid Location & Avoidance (LA) and/or Signing Lighting Guarding (SLG) Street Works qualifications.

This course allows candidates to demonstrate their competence as an operative or supervisor for the avoidance of underground utilities apparatus and/or setting up or monitoring signing lighting and guarding on the road/highway meeting all required regulations.

Course Aims

This SQA-accredited Location & Avoidance Street Works re-assessment course aims to follow a theory only based approach where candidates attend a training session and then complete an invigilated assessment covering the following principles:

  • Interpret information and plans showing the location of underground apparatus
  • Understand how to interpret information and plans showing the location of underground apparatus
  • Identify utilities apparatus and highway services encountered during excavation
  • Understand how to identify utilities apparatus and highway services encountered during excavation
  • Identify the hazards and risks associated with underground utilities apparatus and highway services
  • Understand the hazards and risks associated with underground utilities apparatus and highway services
  • Use pipe and cable location equipment
  • Understand how to use pipe and cable location equipment
  • Follow safe working practices

This SQA-accredited Signing Lighting and Guarding Street Works course aims to follow a theory only based approach where candidates attend a training session and then complete an invigilated assessment covering the following principles:

  • OP: Survey the work site / SUP: Monitor a work site survey
  • OP: Understand how to survey the work site / SUP: Understand how to monitor a work site survey
  • OP: Protect pedestrians, vehicular traffic, and site personnel / SUP: Monitor the protection of pedestrians, vehicular traffic, and site personnel.
  • OP: Understand how to protect pedestrians, vehicular traffic, and site personnel / SUP: Understand how to monitor the protection of pedestrians, vehicular traffic, and site personnel.
  • OP: Provide portable traffic signals and stop/go traffic control / SUP: Monitor the provision of portable traffic signals and stop/go traffic control.
  • OP: Understand how to provide portable traffic signals, stop/go, and priority traffic control / SUP: Understand how to monitor the provision of portable traffic signals and stop/go traffic control.
  • OP: Follow safe working practices / SUP: Monitor site safety
  • SUP: Understand how to monitor site safety (Supervisors only)

Who Should Attend?

This course should be undertaken by candidates who hold existing valid SWQR registrations and certifications covering LA and SLG units.

**Candidates can renew their qualifications by reassessment any time up to 5 years after the expiry date shown on their street works card. If more than 5 years have passed since the expiry date, candidates must undergo a full assessment of their qualifications and will not be eligible for re-assessment. Please note that candidates can not operate on the roadway or highway if their SWQR Street Works card has expired.**

FAQs

How is the course delivered?

The course is delivered in the classroom on a theory-based approach, followed by completion of an invigilated assessment per unit.

Re-assessment examinations will cover the valid units on candidates' SWQR Street Works registration cards.

Candidates are required to complete a multiple-choice, invigilated assessment for each unit, at the end of the training programme, which requires an 80% pass mark.

How long will the course last?

This is a 1-day course. Our courses run from 8:30 - 16:30.

What is the course eligibility?

Candidates should have a proficient level of English to participate in this course.

What are the course pre-requisites?

Candidates must hold a SWQR Street Works registration for the Location & Avoidance qualification and the Signing Lighting Guarding qualification which has not expired more than 5 years.

What PPE is required?

No PPE is required for this course.

What certificates will be achieved?

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be issued with a SQA Certificate. Candidates will also receive a Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR) Registration card, valid for 5 years.
