Course Description

Our SQA-accredited Street Works course trains candidates against the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA) and health and safety practices, guidance, and regulations to successfully locate and avoid underground utilities apparatus and highway services, whilst demonstrating their competence via direct observations.

Course Aims

This SQA accredited Street Works course aims are as follows:

  • Interpret information and plans showing the location of underground apparatus
  • Understand how to interpret information and plans showing the location of underground apparatus
  • Identify utilities apparatus and highway services encountered during excavation
  • Understand how to identify utilities apparatus and highway services encountered during excavation
  • Identify the hazards and risks associated with underground utilities apparatus and highway services
  • Understand the hazards and risks associated with underground utilities apparatus and highway services
  • Use pipe and cable location equipment
  • Understand how to use pipe and cable location equipment
  • Follow safe working practices

Who Should Attend?

Any candidate whose job involves location and avoidance of underground utilities apparatus or highway services.

How is the course delivered?

This course is split up into 3 parts. Theory, practical, and assessment.

The theoretical and practical training programme requires candidates to demonstrate their understanding and competence in the location and avoidance of underground utilities apparatus.

Candidates are required to complete a multiple-choice, invigilated assessment, at the end of the training programme, which requires an 80% pass mark.

How long will the course last?

This is a 1-day course. Our courses run from 8:30 - 16:30.

What is the course eligibility?

Candidates should have a proficient level of English to participate in this course.

What are the course pre-requisites?

There are no pre-requisites for this course.

What PPE is required?

Candidates should bring appropriate PPE as follows:

  • Gloves
  • Hearing Protection
  • Hard Hat
  • Waterproofs
What certificates will be achieved?

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will receive a SQA Certificate. Candidates will also receive a Street Works Qualifications Register (SWQR) Registration card, valid for 5 years.
