Maintaining the hygiene of water across the UK is imperative to maintaining the health and safety of everyone, no matter how they may using water. From drinking, to bathing, everyone deserves secure access to clean and safe water.
EUSR’s National Water Hygiene scheme is vital to ensuring the protection of public health and promoting good water hygiene practices. All UK water companies require individuals entering clean water sites or working on the clean water network (Restricted Operations) to hold a National Water Hygiene EUSR registration – the blue card.
It’s not just water companies who need the National Water Hygiene registration – if you are working on a Restricted Operation on behalf of a water company subcontractor or another organisation, such as Self-Lay Organisation (SLOs), then you need a National Water Hygiene registration.
With McCrae Training, gaining the National Water Hygiene qualification for you or your team is easy. Our accredited course is undertaken and completed within half a day, and can be delivered at a time and place that meets your needs.
What is the EUSR National Water Hygiene course?
The National Water Hygiene training scheme is a nationally recognised scheme for anyone working on, or adjacent to, water supply installations known as Restricted Operations, meeting the requirements as set out by the water supply companies and Water Supply Regulators across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The scheme sets out an individual’s duty of care to prevent contamination and to maintain public health by applying UK Water Industry best practice approaches.
The course aims to provide candidates with essential knowledge, understanding, and awareness of the potential hazards and risks which have the potential to impact the quality of drinking water when working on Restricted Operations sites and how to prevent these, following recognised industry hygiene standards.
Who needs a National Water Hygiene card?
Any person working on a Restricted Operations water site, such as service reservoirs, water pumping stations, water treatment works, wells, springs, boreholes, and those working on the water distribution network inclusive of water mains and service pipes must have a valid National Water Hygiene card.
A standard training programme is delivered to all direct employees of water companies, contractors, consultants, and designers to ensure consistent standards are met when working on drinking water supplies to demonstrate competence in their understanding of safe water hygiene practices.

Our National Water Hygiene course is coupled with our Scottish Water DOMS course. These two courses are scheduled together at our site: National Water Hygiene in the morning, and Scottish Water DOMS in the afternoon.
The Scottish Water Distribution Operations & Maintenance Strategy (DOMS) training course is a company scheme, created and owned by Scottish Water, relevant for everyone working on Scottish Water clean sites.
The Scottish Water DOMS scheme has been produced to ensure everyone follows a consistent approach across the Scottish Water region to safeguard public health and the water quality supplied to customers. National Water Hygiene is a pre-requisite qualification for those hoping to achieve their Scottish Water DOMS.
McCrae Training also runs a variety of Safety, Health, and Environmental Awareness (SHEA) courses. Those in need of National Water Hygiene may also benefit from a SHEA (Water) card, too. The Utility SHEA (Water) scheme is designed for all persons involved in the operational activities of the water industry who require access to construction sites, both permanent and temporary, including all levels of operatives, supervisors, and management.
The Scottish Water DOMS Module 13 sampling scheme has been produced to ensure that Scottish Water staff, contractors, and consultants who are required to take water samples follow a systematic and standardised approach covering key principles associated with:
- The selection and use of the correct sample bottles
- How to measure chlorine residuals correctly
- How to sample correctly using the correct techniques
- Filling bottles in the correct order
- How to complete the appropriate paperwork for submission to the laboratories
Scottish Water staff, contractor’s workforce (inclusive of Utility Connection Providers), and consultants who are required to carry out portable water sampling, appropriate storage and transportation, to Scottish Water’s laboratories, or independent laboratories, for public health validation purposes. This is for individuals connecting into live water distribution networks or as part of the commissioning process for newly laid water mains.
