Course Description

Our SQA-accredited Street Works course trains candidates against the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA) and health and safety practices, guidance, and regulations for operatives and supervisors working on roadways and highways.

The course covers all operatives and supervisor units as detailed under Course Aims below.

Course Aims

Our 5-day course covers 8 modules for operatives as follows:

  • (LA) Location & Avoidance of Underground Apparatus
  • (O1) Signing, Lighting & Guarding
  • (O2) Excavation in the Highway
  • (O3) Reinstatement and Compaction of Backfill Materials
  • (O4) Reinstatement of Sub-base and Road base in Non-Bituminous Materials
  • (O5) Reinstatement in Cold-lay Bituminous Materials
  • (O6) Reinstatement in Hot-lay Bituminous Materials
  • (O8) Reinstatement of Modular Surfaces and Concrete Footways

Our 5-day course covers 7 modules for supervisors as follows:

  • (LA) Location & Avoidance of Underground Apparatus
  • (S1) Monitoring Signing, Lighting & Guarding
  • (S2) Monitoring Excavation in the Highway
  • (S3) Monitoring Reinstatement and Compaction of Backfill Materials
  • (S4) Monitoring Reinstatement of Sub-base and Road base in Non-Bituminous Materials
  • (S5) Monitoring Reinstatement in Bituminous Materials
  • (S7) Monitoring Reinstatement of Modular Surfaces and Concrete Footways

Who Should Attend?

This course is for any person whose job involves the physical works on roads/highways, or, whose job involves supervising and monitoring works on roads/highways.

The course is also suitable for any candidate who has a SWQR registration card that has expired for more than 5 years.

FAQs

How is the course delivered?

This course is split up into 3 parts. Theory, practical, and assessment.

The theoretical and practical training programme requires candidates to demonstrate their understanding and competence covering all units listed above.

Candidates are required to complete a multiple-choice, invigilated assessment, at the end of each unit, which requires an 80% pass mark.

How long will the course last?

This is a 5-day course. Our courses run from 8:30 - 16:30.

What is the course eligibility?

Candidates should have a proficient level of English to participate in this course.

What are the course pre-requisites?

There are no pre-requisites for this course.

What PPE is required?

Candidates should bring appropriate PPE as follows:

  • Safety Footwear
  • Overalls
  • Hi-vis Jacket
  • Safety Glasses
  • Gloves
  • Hearing Protection
  • Hard Hat
  • Waterproofs
What certificates will be achieved?

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be issued with a SQA Certificate. Candidates will also receive a Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR) Registration card, valid for 5 years.
