Hydrostatic Pressure Testing of Water Mains (PE/Ductile) (2 Days)

Hydrostatic Pressure Testing of Water Mains (PE/Ductile) (2 Days)

Course Description

The EUSR-endorsed training programme follows the UK NOS (National Occupational Standards) for conducting specified testing of water network engineering products and assets (Water Mains).

The principles of the course follow the requirements as set out within Lloyds Register WIRS (Water Industry Registration Scheme) which specify that all new water mains constructed within housing developments and industrial sites require to be hydrostatic pressure tested as part of UK Water Companies commissioning process to ensure leak-free water mains.

Course Aims

The course provides candidates with an overview, knowledge, and understanding of the principles and key approaches to effectively pressure test PE (polyethylene) and DI (ductile iron) water mains.

Throughout the 2-day course, candidates will be taken through the theory of hydro-static pressure testing of PE and DI water mains following the principles of the IGN (Information Guidance Note) 4-01-03 (Issue 2: 2015) - Guide to Pressure Testing of Pressure Pipes and Fittings for Use by Public Water Suppliers.

Candidates will also be required to set up a hydro-static data logger on a water main configuration,  interpret information from the data logger, and use various pressure test scenarios to calculate and validate the data using the principles as set out within the IGN and general requirements determined by UK Water Companies.

Who Should Attend?

Anyone who will be carrying out the installation and commissioning of newly laid water mains (PE and DI), contract or project managers responsible for the workforce installing new water mains, and water mains designers.

FAQs

How is the course delivered?

A qualified trainer delivers the course taking the candidates through the theory and practical application of hydro-static pressure testing, PE, and DI water mains.

Safety requirements and principles are covered associated with pressure testing of water mains, minimum test pressure of 15 bar is the standard operating pressure on-site during the commissioning process.

The practical training involves the testing of PE and DI water mains, removal of air, and the setting up and analysing data loggers to determine effective hydro-static pressure testing, operating under a controlled and simulated approach.

Candidates are taken through an overview of the calculations for pressure testing PE water mains based on time to pressure, and associated acceptable levels of pressure degradation during the pressure test, which also accounts for permissible percentages of air. The trainer also covers the principles of pressure testing DI water mains using the principles of water loss and water added calculations as set out within IGN 4-01-03 (Issue 2: 2015).

How long will the course last?

This is a 2-day course. Our courses run from 8:30 - 16:30.

What is the course eligibility?

Candidates should have a proficient level of English to participate in this course.

What are the course pre-requisites?

We recommend candidates have valid National Water Hygiene training in place (Scottish Water DOMS modules 1-12 would also be required if operating in Scotland).

What PPE is required?

Candidates should bring appropriate PPE as follows:

  • Safety Footwear
  • Overalls
  • Hi-vis Jacket
  • Safety Glasses
  • Gloves
  • Hearing Protection
  • Hard Hat
  • Waterproofs
What certificates will be achieved?

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be registered on the Energy and Utility Skills Register, where registrations are valid for 3 years from the date of the training. Candidates will also be issued a Virtual EUSR Registration card. Physical cards can be provided upon request.
