Course Description

Category 1: Locate Utility Services (HSG47) is a training and assessment programme designed for candidates carrying out excavation works to safely locate, mark, and avoid underground utility services using recognised and approved detection methods.

A combination of classroom and site-based activities will be delivered. 

The course programme covers the following National Occupational Standards and HSE guidance documents:

  • EUSMUNC06 Locate and Avoid Services for Utilities Network Construction
  • EUSEPUS044 Location and Identification of Underground Utility Services in the Electricity Power Utilities
  • HSG47 Avoiding Danger from Underground Services
  • HSG150 Health and Safety in Construction

Course Aims

The course aims and objectives are as follows:

  • Interpret utility plan drawings and identify symbols and coded information
  • Prepare and use location equipment to locate a range of underground services
  • Identify the dangers and hazards associated with underground services
  • Recognise why some services are more difficult to locate
  • Carry out site marking using appropriate methods

How is the course delivered?

This course is split up into theory, practical, and assessment. An EUSR-accredited trainer will deliver the course. 

How long will the course last?

This is a 1-day course. Our courses run from 8:30 - 16:30.

What is the course eligibility?

Candidates should have a proficient level of English to participate in this course. 

What are the course pre-requisites?

There are no pre-requisites for this course. 

What PPE is required?

Candidates should bring appropriate PPE as follows:

  • Safety Footwear
  • Overalls
  • Hi-vis Jacket
  • Safety Glasses
  • Gloves
  • Hearing Protection
  • Hard Hat
  • Waterproofs
What certificates will be achieved?

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be registered on the Energy and Utility Skills Register, where registrations are valid for 3 years from the date of training. Candidates will also be issued with a Virtual EUSR Registration card. Physical cards can be provided upon request.
